Description

The FoodPantry Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the operations of the food pantry by assisting with various tasks related to the intake, organization, distribution, and maintenance of food and supplies. This position requires a compassionate individual dedicated to helping alleviate food insecurity in the community. The Food Pantry Assistant works under the supervision of the Food Pantry Coordinator or Manager and collaborates with other staff members and volunteers to ensure the smooth functioning of the pantry.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in receiving, sorting, and organizing food donations from various sources, including individuals, organizations, and food drives.
  2. Help maintain accurate records of inventory levels, including tracking expiration dates and rotating stock to ensure freshness.
  3. Collaborate with volunteers to pack food bags or boxes according to established guidelines and client needs.
  4. Greet and assist clients in a courteous and respectful manner during food distribution hours, providing support and guidance as needed.
  5. Assist in verifying client eligibility and completing necessary documentation for food assistance programs, adhering to confidentiality and privacy policies.
  6. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the pantry space, including shelving units, storage areas, and workspaces.
  7. Assist in periodic inventory counts and participate in regular pantry clean-up days or maintenance tasks.
  8. Communicate effectively with pantry staff, volunteers, and clients to provide information about available resources, services, and special programs.
  9. Follow established safety procedures and guidelines for handling, storing, and distributing food items, including proper sanitation practices.
  10. Participate in training sessions, staff meetings, and other professional development opportunities as required.


Qualifications

Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in social services, nutrition, or related fields is a plus.
  2. Previous experience volunteering or working in a food pantry, food bank, or similar nonprofit organization is preferred.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds with empathy and respect.
  4. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  5. Basic computer skills for data entry, recordkeeping, and communication purposes.
  6. Ability to lift and carry moderate loads, stand for extended periods, and perform physical tasks as needed.
  7. Knowledge of food safety practices and regulations is desirable.
  8. Commitment to the mission and values of the organization, including a dedication to serving those experiencing food insecurity with dignity and compassion.
  9. Must have current and valid state driver's license, in good standing with no insurability restrictions and must be insurable under SEI's auto insurance policy.
