The Role You'll Contribute

The Inpatient Coder reviews, analyzes, and interprets clinical documentation in the medical record, applying ICD-10-CM/PCS coding conventions and MS-DRG Medicare Prospective Payment System requirements. Delivers outstanding customer service and maintains professional relationships with clinicians and staff.

The Value You'll Bring To The Team
  • Reviews, analyzes, and interprets clinical documentation applying ICD-10 codes in accordance with ICD-10-CM rules and conventions, coding policy and procedures, payer specifications, and official coding guidelines; evaluates DRG options and optimizes them in accordance with UHDDS rules and applicable policies.
  • Verifies CAC codes and that assignment of diagnostic and procedure codes is supported by the physician's documentation in the record.
  • Communicates effectively with physicians and allied health personnel about the need for comprehensive, accurate, and timely clinical documentation.
  • Discusses documentation optimization and issues with physicians for clarification of discrepancies or additional diagnoses when needed.
  • Applies ICD-10-CM/PCS codes, MS-DRG codes, Present on Admission codes, and patient status codes, understanding their impact on mortality, quality, and reimbursement.

Qualifications

Education And Experience Required
  • High school diploma and two years of coding education (medical coding certificate program or 2-year HIM program), including medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and pathophysiology coursework.
  • Three or more years of inpatient hospital coding experience in a tertiary care facility, including cases requiring specialized coding skills (e.g., cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, trauma surgery, neonatology, pediatrics, plastic and reconstruction surgery, bariatric surgery, cardiology).

Licensure, Certification, Or Registration Required
  • RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CIC certification
