Based at IERES, Demokratizatsiya: The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization is a peer-reviewed quarterly journal. For over 30 years, our global community of scholars has been producing incisive, policy-relevant analysis of developments in the former Soviet Union.

Position Specific Summary

Demokratizatsiya is looking to hire student staff to assist with day-to-day journal operations and support the growth of the journal. Positions will start at 10 hours per week; depending on journal needs, additional hours may be available. Positions will last for the duration of the semester, with the possibility for renewal. Training will be provided.

Working with the editor of the journal, the student(s) will be responsible for:

  • Reading submitted manuscripts and identifying suitable peer reviewers
  • Corresponding with authors
  • Editing accepted manuscripts for language, structure, and style
  • Laying out edited articles using Adobe InDesign and inputting authors' corrections
  • Producing DOIs and logging them with Crossref
  • Uploading final journal content to online platforms and coordinating with our print publisher
  • Updating our website and promoting journal content on social media
With the support of the editor, the student(s) will also be encouraged to conceive, plan, and execute a special issue on a topic of relevance to the journal. In addition to the responsibilities listed above, this will involve identifying a suitable topic and soliciting contributions from qualified authors.

Depending on the time, interests, and skills of the student(s), additional projects may include:
  • Helping to transition the journal to an Open Access model
  • Helping to develop the journal's online presence, including social media strategy
  • Helping to develop a network of new contributors for the journal among scholars and practitioners in the former Soviet Union and elsewhere
  • Revising the journal's style guide
  • Producing videos about the publication process for the journal's website

Standard Position Description

The student will provide basic support with print, web, social media, and/or other digital content. Tasks may include: posting and updating website pages and social media accounts; create written communications and/or newsletters, assist with graphic and/or video editing. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental/faculty needs.

This is an entry level position, little to no experience required, all training will be provided.
